Cornwall - there's so much to see & do....

Whether you're seeking peace & quiet or have a packed holiday in mind - Cornwall has something for everyone.

From beautiful beaches to the splendour of Truro Cathedral and its' great shopping.  From art galleries and theatre - including the amazing Minack open-air theatre built into the cliff above Porthcurno, to castles and gardens galore. Whatever you're looking for, and whatever the weather, you can be sure that you will have a memorable holiday.

Beaches

There are many beautiful beaches within easy reach of Mousehole. Porthcurno is a gently shelving arc where the sand is made of finely crushed shells.  If it's surf you're after then Sennen Cove is a great place.  Other beaches definitely worth a visit are Perranuthoe, Praa Sands, Carbis Bay and Pedn Vounder. See www.cornwall-beaches.co.uk for more suggestions.

Penzance & Newlyn

It's an easy flat walk to Penzance (3 miles) via Newlyn (2 miles).  Or take the bus, which runs every 30 minutes during the day from Mousehole harbour. Newlyn is the largest fishing port in the South West and the fishmarket is a hive of activity every morning.  Pick up some fish, fresh from a trawler for dinner.  Penzance is the largest town in West Cornwall and has a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants. The statue of Sir Humphry Davy (inventor of the miner's safety lamp), in Market Jew Street commemorates his achievements.

Castles & Gardens

If castles and gardens are your thing - then you'll be spoilt for choice.  The legendary St Michael's Mount is just across Mounts Bay from Mousehole.  It can be reached at low tide by a causeway from Marazion, or at high water by taking a motor boat from the pier. Other properties definitely worth visiting, include Trengwainton Gardens near Penzance, Trebah Garden between Helston and Falmouth, and Pendennis Castle in Falmouth.

Lands End

A visit to the most westerly point in mainland UK is a must do for your stay. Have your photo taken beside the signpost showing the distance from Lands End to your home town and take in the stunning scenery. There are also a number of attractions suitable for all the family.

Events

There's always plenty going on in West Cornwall.  Events not to be missed include;  Golowan Festival in Penzance which takes place in June.  St Just's La Frowda  in July each year. Newlyn Fish Festival on August Bank Holiday Monday, and Mousehole's own Sea Salts & Sail in early July.

Art Galleries & Theatre

Make a date to to see a show at the spectacular Minack Theatre above Porthcurno beach - open air performances take place throughout the season. West Cornwall has a rich history of art too - the St Ives and Newlyn Schools were established in the 19th Century and were home to artists such as Walter Langley & Stanhope Forbes.  See their work at the Penlee Gallery in Newlyn and the Tate St Ives.

Truro & Falmouth

Truro & Falmouth make great day trips. Visit Truro's majestic cathedral right in the heart of the shopping area, with interesting independent shops as well as large branches of the major stores. Falmouth, warmed by the Gulf stream and on the shoreline of the world's third largest natural harbour, is home to the National Maritime Museum. Or visit St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula by taking a trip from Falmouth or the King Harry chain ferry across the river Fal.

The Isles of Scilly

A trip to the Isles of Scilly makes an unforgetteable day. The archipelago, 28 miles off Lands End is renowned for its azure seas and white sandy beaches. Take the Scillonian III or the helicopter from Penzance, or the fixed wing from Lands End Airport. Once on Scilly you can choose to stay on St Mary's or travel by launch to one of the 'off' islands - Tresco, Bryher, St Martins and St Agnes.

St Ives

There's lots to see and do in St Ives.  Great beaches, fantastic cafes, restaurants & pubs, super shopping and many galleries, including Tate St Ives.  Top tip - avoid St Ives traffic and terrible parking, by taking the train from Penzance or St Erth via picturesque Carbis Bay. www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

 Further Afield

Other sights definitely worth considering for day trips, include The Eden Project, with its' amazing Biomes built on the site of an old clay pit near St Austell.  The Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey, is one of the most popular botanical gardens in the UK.  There's also Jamie Oliver's restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall - at Watergate Bay,  near Newquay.
